Redmond, A. 0. B., Kaschula, R. 0. C., Freeseman, C., and Hansen, J. D. L. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 470. The colon in kwashiorkor. The colon in kwashiorkor was investigated by means of rectal biopsy and sigmoidoscopy in 20 children, followed by barium enema in 10 of the children. The colon during the acute phase of the disease showed a surface epithelial atrophy, with infiltration of plasma cells and congestion of small vessels. Viewed under the dissecting microscope, a disorganized vascular pattern was seen in all cases. On recovery from kwashiorkor after 3 to 4 weeks, the abnormal vascular pattem and epithelial atrophy of the colon had retumed to normal in most children.

Aflatoxins and kwashiorkor: a study in Sudanese children.
Blood and urine samples from 252 Sudanese children were investigated for their aflatoxin content by high-performance liquid chromatography. The children comprised 44 with kwashiorkor, 32 with marasmic kwashiorkor, 70 with marasmus, and 106 age-matched, normally nourished controls. Aflatoxins were detected more often and at higher concentrations in sera from children with kwashiorkor than in the...

Calmodulin-free ghost membranes were prepared from erythrocytes of kwashiorkor children and from healthy children in the same age bracket. In the absence of calmodulin, the specific activity of MgZ+-dependent Ca2+-pumping ATPase (Ca2++ Mg2+-ATPase) of kwashiorkor membranes was more than 40 percent lower than the specific activity of the normal enzymes, whose maximum velocity was increased by at...
متن کاملDefective local leukocyte mobilization in children with kwashiorkor.
The Rebuck window technique was used to determine the functional integrity of the inflammatory response in nine children with kwashiorkor. The total numbers of leukocytes mobilized into skin abrasions were similar between kwashiorkor and control patients. However, children with kwashiorkor showed significantly delayed and decreased macrophage migration and increased polymorphonuclear leukocyte ...
متن کاملComparison of changes in serum proteins during early treatment in kwashiorkor and marasmus.
Kwashiorkor and marasmus are the two commonest forms of infant malnutrition found in tropical countries and the fundamental aetiological difference between them appears to be in the proportion of carbohydrate in the diet. The diet leading to marasmus seems to be reasonably balanced though insufficient in quantity and therefore in calories as well as protein, whereas the diet leading to kwashior...
